graffiti

I went to the west end yesterday and being the alley rat that I am I turned south on Lookout Lane. It looks like an alley but it's not, so I turned west into an alley and there was graffiti on two garages. On one garage was VLK and directly accross from it one was tagged LKK. If you studied graffiti at all, VLK means Vice Lords Killer, and LKK means Latin Kings Killer. This sort of tagging, if authentic, usually foretells of a gang fight in the area. I can only hope this is just taggers imitating what the seen sprayed somewhere else.

I hope someone who lives in this town is not delusional enough to think we don't have a gang problem. Usually these problems are south of Locust a little farther. The west end they were heavy on 6th. street, and the east end used to be around 14th. street. It's been awhile since I was on top of this stuff, so who knows where they are now. This is a good example of why we need more police, and tougher laws. If the beat cops came back the problem would be addressed quicker. If the laws were strengthened, say a $1,000 fine first offense, it might get rid of the amateurs. Offenders could get community service removing the graffiti as restitution, plus a fine. There should be no age breakdown, if you do it at 12 years of age cough up the fine and do the time.

Fines are at the maximum under state law, which is up to $500 &/or 30 days in jail.

Very true, Keith but are they enforceable for juveniles? We know adults aren't doing this it's bangers, wannabes, and taggers. Usually they're around 11 to 15. When they do get caught, they usually get probation with no other penalty. Why not make at least community service apply so they see that they don't get away with a slap on the wrist?

How many individuals have been arrested for graffiti over the last twelve months. What has happened to them. What is the fine presently. Can we increase it?

This was sent to Legal and the Poice Dept.I will let you know when I get the rest of the answer.

Thanks again, Keith. I think you may be surprised by what you don't find. Tagging is an art of sorts and I don't think many get caught unless someone that knows them catches them in the act. It just seems that when it happens the homeowners are elderly on pensions, or younger couples who really can't afford to remove the graffiti. Seems like the perprtraters should get the worst end of the deal. If they just get a slap on the wrist, there is no incentive to stop doing it.

Cruiser - all over the east end (even in McClellan Heights - the bridge support on Jersey Ridge, under locust) is graffitti with LVNK or some such, with dots over it. Any info about these?

Also, in a state in which its a felony to steal a library book, howzabout we up fines on tag "artists". Cops just shrug this stuff off. Apparently no one ever told Bladel the story "for the want of nail, the shoe was lost, etc."

Ambrose, sounds more like a crown symbol with a k for killer. If authentic it also means Latin King Killer. As long as they aren't any saying VLK nearby, they are just marking their territory.
It seems like the cops shrug it off, but they arrest them, book them, jail them, and then the court lets them walk. The laws need to get some teeth into them. I don't know if it can be done locally, but it's worth looking into.
