I changed things around a bit, and added a few things. It's as new to me as it is to you, but I think it'll work. As usual I'll try to have a variety of topics, but come summer there will be more postings about car events. You can email me at cruisaholic@hotmail.com Keep the shiny side up!

solving the school shooting problem

I've been working on the problem with school security so much I haven't been on the ball with my posts. Over on the SOLO blog are the local posts of interest that I may have posted with a slightly different slant. I came up with an idea of locking all school doors but one and having the various shop classes design and build an electromagnet and install it in the ceiling over the only door with outside access. When a nutcase comes in with his guns either he is glued to the magnet along with his weapons, or his weapons are. All the school would have to do if an intruder comes in with weapons is call the police; then when the police arrive they can cut the juice and let him fall into waiting arms. If it could be made to work it would be cheap, reliable, and cheaper than most other options I have heard. I honestly don't believe arming the teachers will work, but cause more problems than it eliminates. Gun control doesn't work, crimanals and madmen don't go through the Sherriff's department for a gun anyway. Metal detectors punish everyone entering the building and we already have a police presence in the buildings anyway.

Why do you think that ALLOWING the teachers to be armed would not work? Right now we have a situation where criminals have a soft target where they know they can inflict terror and face very little resistance. I am not for all teachers being required to be armed but for those that choose to carry concealed would be trained and certified. People who are armed and don't know how to operate the weapon ARE more dangerous than those without any weapon at all.

I have two sons in a local high school. Although I believe that schools should keep their doors locked during the day, I also believe that people are over-reacting to school shootings.

School violence has actually declined in the past 10 years. The chance of a child being killed in a school shooting is miniscule when compared to other causes. For example, children are more likely to die from the flu than to be murdered at school.

I’m personally tired of my kids having to grow up in this media-driven environment of fear. Take a breath people -- there’s NOT a madmen with a gun around every corner.

I don't think arming teachers would work because if they don't use the gun it can be taken away from them. It's one thing to learn how to fire a handgun and quite another to shoot someone. Not everyone is comfortable with taking a life even if it saves their own.

We have a son at Central also and I feel even one life lost at a school is not acceptable. As far as our environment being media driven, I couldn't agree more but see no easy way to filter out the bad news or fear. If you have ever lost a child as we have you would know why we feel this way.

To crusier - I entirely agree with your comments regarding arming teachers.

I have not lost a child. Two of my sisters have so I have some small idea of why you feel that way. I'm very sorry for your enormous loss.

My point was that locking the doors is a good safeguard but arming teachers (in my opinion) is politician & media driven fear mongering.

I'm unaware of any school shooting where the school had their doors locked and screened incoming visitors. So it appears that such methods provide adequate security.

I should have added locking the doors to the outside. With the fire at Central it's a good idea to be able to get kids and faculty out. Alot of this is media driven; they cut in with breaking news and all the facts wrong only to remind us they got the exclusive story. Basically school shootings aren't a big issue, I feel that school safety shouldn't be an issue at all. Children are a gift from God and we never know when he'll call them home. If you have lost a child you have our heartfelt condolences. If your child is still with you treasure what you have.
