I don't like the idea of spending money on capital improvements at this time. My reasoning is quite simple. The money isn't there. I realize the council went to Des Moines hat in hand to get state money.
But if you stop and think, the money they are asking for is ours anyway. We gave it to them in State income tax, gasoline, sales tax, etc.
The increase in Commercial property tax is unconstitutional. State law says property tax can be raised or lowered up to 4% a year. Not 9%. When you add in the stormwater fee businesses have passed the cost on to us. Gas is $2.29 a gallon here but a short cruise up the road and the same gas is $2.13 a gallon in Clinton.
We have streets that flood with a quarter inch of rainfall, potholes a pick-up truck could fall in, trash blowing all over on any given day, and a justice system that is not working. Empty boarded houses in various states of disrepair dot the inner city. We have empty businesses, including the old GCO on East 53rd. street. Let's fix what's broke, bring back civic pride, and get something paved besides Kirkwood befor the Bix.
When the idiots that be, at the time, started talks with the boat about a downtown hotel they accomplished 2 things. They basically put the Radison out of business, and sealed the fate of the parking ramps if it goes through. Good thinking people. As for the hotel, if they ok the 10 high removable flood wall for the hotel, the first big flood and the lawsuits will be financially crippling.
With the track record of the old council, and the same for the new, I don't believe these people should be allowed to pass any spending over $2 million without a public vote. They have proven, when push comes to shove, that they don't know the answers to almost anything relating to the projects they ram down our throats.
I changed things around a bit, and added a few things. It's as new to me as it is to you, but I think it'll work. As usual I'll try to have a variety of topics, but come summer there will be more postings about car events. You can email me at cruisaholic@hotmail.com Keep the shiny side up!
