crime figures

A lot of people say the crime around here isn't that bad. Well I have some facts from the FBI Uniform Crime Reporting Program webpage, Crime in the United States 2005. You can access the figures here.

In 2,005-
Cedar Rapids had a population of 122,698. There were 417 violent crimes reported, 1 murder, 45 forcible rapes and 250 aggrivated assaults.

Davenport had a population of 98,751. There were 1,323 violent crimes reported, 7 murders, 54 forcible rapes and 990 aggrivated assaults.

Des Moines had a population of 195,093. There were 1,228 violent crimes reported, 5 murders, 110 forcible rapes and 819 aggrivated assaults.

I sense something not so great around here. Davenport is the smallest city listed, but it had the most murders. Davenport is the smallest city listed but it has more aggrevated assaults. Davenport is the smallest city listed but has more violent crime reported. Davenport has only 22 less robberies than Des Moines which is about double in size. Other cities in the state are likewise lower crime rate than Davenport. When are people going to wake up and realize we don't have to stand for this. If the city council, the police chief, or state government won't do anything about this who will. Davenport cannot expect to attract new businesses with figures like this.

We need new leadership in the Davenport Police Department. Bladel is a great politician but a lousy leader. New blood is needed!

One of the problems is that the crime is localized to a few small areas. If you take out the Northwood village apartments, 14th/Gaines area, Goose Creek, Heatherton, and the apartments on W. Kimberly between Pine and Division, I suspect our crime stats would be better than those other cities.

So if you're a upper class person that spends your days in Windsor Crest, or shopping at Northpark or the Elmore area, you aren't really exposed to the actual crime problem in Davenport. Maybe if the rich people were scared we'd get some actual changes.

QCI, you make a good point. But not all the crime is in these areas, just the criminals. Stores on 53rd. Street are getting robbed, and the shootings seemed to have moved to West Locust. I live SOLO. As a matter of fact about 8 blocks north of you. Even if someone doesn't live in a higher crime area; does it give them the right to ignore it? A lot of people are realizing that crime is up. If the Guardian Angels agree to help, doesn't that in itself say we have a problem?

I'm certainly not claiming we don't have a problem, I'm just suggesting a possible reason that some others don't feel we do.

Another problem is that we're the "main" city of the Quad Cities, so we (combined with parts of RI) are somewhat the "inner city" of the metro area.

I agree that Rock Island is part of the problem. I guess my problem is what can we do about it. I'll be the first to admit I don't have an answer but I think if enough people get the information about crime levels it will help. Two heads are better than one kind of thinking.

Don't forget Horizen Homes (spelling)that are owned directly or indirectly by DavenportOne or some group thereof. They need to clean up their rentals also. Then you have the City of Davenport with rentals on Heathern, North Elsie and other sites around the city. Many of them had a lot of police calls.

It is so easy to cast blame on the Quad-City Rental Property People. They wanted to hold the tenant's feet to the fire. But, some of the liberal, all the blame is the landlords, can't do anything without being in trouble. That is why many of them are getting out of the rental business in Davenport and the Slumlords remain.

i would not have a rental property in Davenport.
