againsters

On another blog I read something like "the againsters are just against anything". That seemed like it needed to be addressed so here goes. Againsters are for fiscal responsibility in government. Againsters are for professionism in government. Politicians should be held to a higher standard that common folk like me. Againsters are for progress in our cities, not declining populations and lame excuses. Againsters are for bringing new businesses to town and not running established business out. Againsters are against raising taxes to pay for things not needed or wanted enacted by a lame duck council with an inflated ego.
As a so called againster, I would like to see Windbag gone next election, but if history repeats itself he'll get back in. The big problem, I think, is the total lack of opponents who can offer a viable change that the people like. This past election was a case of the lesser of two evils. Alderman Lynn states the city lacks professionalism and I couldn't agree more. If these people could work together instead of figuring ways to out do the opponents we could have a great city.
Maybe city council needs to be volunteer. No salary, no perks, just people who really want to serve the public. Since most council members don't need the money anyway, why not give their salary, and insurance back to city. It would be a great token effort to show they mean business.
Some people resort to name calling when they disagree, and that's too bad. I'm as guilty as the next guy at times, but I'm going to count to 10 and see if I can better argue my point.

I've said before that by anything I mean any amenity (library, museum, park, stadium, skybridge, parking garage, market, etc) or any non street/sewer/safety item that is designed to add to the quality of life of Davenport.

Even if you only supported the new libraries, I'd say that disqualifies you from being an againster.

No, I'm not for the library. For the simple fact that I believe if they closed a library on the east of town one should have been built to replace it first. That said, I really hope the RME makes it. I'm a big music lover, except rap, and this kind of venue is good for all. It should teach history of regional music to kids and interested people of all ages. If that makes me not an againster, so be it, but I reserve my right to be against almost anything else that comes along.

I'd be right with you on the library thing if they weren't going to build one to replace the Annie Wittenmyer branch, but its coming. I'm an east side guy, and grew up blocks from the branch library. However, I can wait a couple years for the replacement.

Plus now I live blocks from the main library...

I used to get to library a lot more than I do. I read alot so it just makes sense to use it. With the way the city is getting on the parking thing, it would be easier for me to walk down.

For some reason, the council has strongly divided itself into D1 groupies, for whom all spending is good, in fact the bigger the better, and CAVE folks who would diminish government functions below sustainable levels.

We can't fill potholes, inspect properties, and do the occasional public works project (i.e. library, park ) too?

What's wrong with the city council acting like professionals? They seem to think they're special but they act worse than the common folk. Regardless of who does what, spending millions of dollars isn't going to help anything.
The council is going to end up spending a half a million dollars to save $200,000 on the inspector fiasco alone. Add to that the money they're throwing away to start up the automated garbage, and the money owed to the city and it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out we could be headed for trouble.
I know one of the problems is egos, when you think you are important you have a big one. These idiots, and I don't mean to idiots a bad name, need to learn to play together or part company. Now that the mayor puts a veto on anything the Tuna and D1 doesn't want, it's going to get interesting. All we have to do is remember that last lame duck council.
