Kudos

I'd like to take a moment to tell Alderman Meyer to keep up the good work. I'm not in his ward, but I am in his ward regularly. I've seen him on several occasions in different locations checking on building projects, complaints, neighborhood eyesores, etc. It's a thankless job, and being anti big spending isn't an invitation to easy street. I wish he were alderman of the 5th. ward as I think more would get done. Hammerlink needs to learn the ropes, but with a little experience I believe he will be a force to reconed with also. When egos flare at these meetings things are said that can get personal. The rest of the bunch should learn to play well together and quit calling in people from out of state to tell them what they already know. Not everyone agrees all the time. With a little common curtesy and an ability to listen to opposing thoughts this council could make more friends instead of digging trenches between the opposing sides.

His heart's in the right place. There are times that he serves as the conscience of city government. (Which means that at least somebody is doing it...)

But Ald. Meyer can go off half-cocked, too. He told someone I know about a certain party being behind in payments to the city, but it didn't check out.

His grousing about the RME getting a liquor license was well-intentioned but off base. Culture = economic developement. Attracting more people to the RME will help downtown bars, not hurt them because somebody happens to buy a beer during a concert.

But nobody gets it right all the time. At least he TRIES.

I like Keith because he doesn't change his position. One day Lynn wanted someone reprimanded for talking about their job loss, and the next day he wants a whistleblower law to protect them. Go figure. I don't think RME should get the other liquor license either, but only because they want to mix the booze with 19 and 20 year olds. If it's separate for everyone else, it should be for them also.

What about bowling alleys and street fests?

Good question. I believe bowling alleys have a separate bar room, and street fests would be in a whole different catagory. I'm not up on the tavern laws but it used to be you could only have minors in a bar if you were a private club like Turner Hall, the Eagles, or something along that line. Plus RME being a non profit should check into how this would effect their status.

The non profit status and how a bar would affect the RME was the issue. Resolution will not occur until the Assessors Office checks in January 2007. One has to remember that the City gave over 6.5 million to RME for its mission.

Also not sure about the, certain party reference, who is up on payments to the City, seems quite a few are behind. And it really should not be an Alderman's job to get the bills paid.

"...the City gave over 6.5 million to RME for its mission"

Don't you mean River Renaissance?

This is just like when you say the City paid 7+ million for the Skybridge, when in reallity it what $500,000!
