I changed things around a bit, and added a few things. It's as new to me as it is to you, but I think it'll work. As usual I'll try to have a variety of topics, but come summer there will be more postings about car events. You can email me at cruisaholic@hotmail.com Keep the shiny side up!

back to business

Since I voted early and often today, I think it's time to move on. On the City-Data website are crime rates for 2004, except Des Moines which is 2003. You can access their site here. This webpage gives you access to crime figures for Iowa cities over 6,000 population. Here are some figures from the site-

Murders

Cedar Rapids-0 per 100,000
Davenport-6.1 per 100,000
Des Moines-4.0 per 100,000
Waterloo-4.4 per 100,000

Rapes

Cedar Rapids-34.0 per 100,000
Davenport-53.9 per 100,000
Des Moines-46.3 per 100,000
Waterloo-59.6 per 100,000

Assualts

Cedar Rapids-204.5 per 100,000
Davenport-1,013.6 per 100,000
Des Moines- 158.5 per 100,000
Waterloo- 314.2 per 100,000

City-Data crime rate index (higher means more crime, U.S. average= 327.2

Cedar Rapids- 340.5
Davenport- 682.7
Des Moines- 382.1
Waterloo- 360.3

As stated earlier these are 2004 figures, except Des Moines which only has 2003 figures available. My question to the Police Chief, County Attorney, City Council, and sitting Judges is this; why is our assault rate 5 times that of Cedar Rapids and Des Moines? Why is our murder rate so high? Granted I only used figures for violent crime, but I feel these have the biggest impact on the victim. We still need answers, we still want something done, we want our streets back.

Addenum-
In all fairness I must add that this site has much more than crime rates on cities. It has population, major businesses, city governement, housing costs, and in some cases pictures of points of interest. The crime figures are on on chart about halfway down the page. Most cities also have a chart on city employees and weather.

I would love to see the ethnicity ratio for these cities. I live in a middle class white neighborhood and we don't seem to have these problems.

I stand corrected it's a mostly white neighborhood. We all seem to get along just fine.

The breakdown of races in Davenport in 2004 is-

White-81.3%
Black-9.2%
Hispanic-5.4%
Two or more races-2.4%
Other race-2.3%
Vietnamese-1.2%
American Indian-1.0%
(Total may be greater than 100% because Hispanics could be counted in other races)
